What’s for Dinner?
Rice.
Just rice? Yes, just rice. Last week Heather Whittaker showed her family eating rice. Here’s the deal, we are taking one meal a week and choosing to have only rice. In turn we are taking the money we would have spent on that night’s meal and we are going to sponsor a child with Compassion International.
Brian, another blogger who works for Compassion, is sending out a weekly guide highlighting a country and the state of their current food crisis. This week was Haiti. Here are just a few highlights from this week:
- 54% of Hatians live on less than $1 a day
- prices for staple food items like rice and beans rose 78% from January to February
- many families have resorted to eating “mud pies” http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/01/080130-AP-haiti-eatin.html
It’s a no-brainer. We can give up one meal in order to feed a child for a month. Plus it means we are making ourselves aware of what is going on in the world. Maybe we can’t do a lot but we can eat rice and we pray.
Anyone want some rice?

hurray!
It is easy for Americans to forget that in our geographical backyard, people aren’t concerned about having to put gas in their tanks but instead are concerned about putting food in their stomachs. I admire your conscious effort to make a difference. Haitian students of mine tell me that with soaring gas prices that show little sign of getting any lower, their nation’s famine will also only get worse before it gets better.
I’m reminded of a Creole proverb they taught me: “Deye mon gen mon” which literally means beyond the mountains there are still more mountains.
What a wonderful idea! I am going to discuss this with my family and see if we can do that too.

Good for you guys! What a great idea.
The link above is (presumably) a program for free rice. It’s an addictive vocab game to boot!
Hope you are enjoying the summer–we’d love to get together with everyone soon!

Oh, No! Now I am hooked on yet another word game site. The Free Rice site is completely addictive.
